College + University Program
Exciting things are always happening in the Launch STEM Careers (LSC) College + University Program! LSC is partnering with Florida Institute of Technology’s (FIT) Ocean Engineering Department to provide a mobile science laboratory to elementary and middle schools. All women attending FIT and studying to become STEM professionals of the future are invited to participate in LSC. By participating in the Launch STEM Careers (LSC) College + University Program, college and university students benefit in the following ways:
Access to professional STEM mentors
Students have the opportunity to meet with both active and retired STEM professionals—professional STEM mentors review résumés, discuss job strategies, and conduct mock interviews with participating students.
Networking events with STEM professionals
LSC hosts the annual Women in STEM Networking Event (WSNE), and students participating in the program are invited to attend. The WSNE provides an avenue for female students to network with women STEM professionals, and participation in this event has led to internships with local companies.
Membership in the FIT Launch STEM Careers Club
The FIT Launch STEM Careers Club (FITLSCC) was established in 2018. Members meet monthly to plan and practice hands-on STEM activities, develop a support system for all students enrolled in STEM-related fields at FIT, tour local companies and meet female STEM professionals, and host female speakers to discuss professional STEM topics. While becoming a member of FITLSCC is optional, students who participate in both LSC and FITLSCC are provided with the following additional benefits:
- One-on-one mentoring sessions with career STEM professionals.
- Internships for FITLSCC officers.
- An opportunity to mentor girls attending University Park Elementary School by leading hands-on STEM activities with students in grades 4–6.
