The Launch Stem Careers (LSC) initiative provides detailed mentor lesson plans and kitted materials to use in the classroom so when volunteer mentors arrive at their designated school, they can be ready to conduct lessons without spending time preparing the exercises or having to purchase materials. Some examples of these activities include but are not limited to the following:
- Design/build/test a Mars Rover on budget
- Build circuit “bug,” flashlights or lighted cards to learn about series and parallel circuits
- Design/build/test foam rockets
We go to each elementary and middle school five times during the school year to conduct hands-on activities. Being involved in the LSC program provides professional mentors, college mentors, and high school mentors ample opportunity to encourage and inspire elementary and middle school girls that girls can! pursue careers in STEM.
