Launch STEM Careers (LSC) project is proud to announce that we are partnering with the Florida Institute of Technology’s (FIT) Ocean Engineering Department beginning with the 2018–2019 school year! FIT will conduct one visit at each of the elementary and middle schools participating in LSC. Professor Kelli Hunsucker, who is also the academic advisor to the FIT Launch STEM Careers Club, is our point of contact for the partnership.
FIT’s Science Bus allows for traveling hands-on learning activities that can take place on land and/or in the water. The Science Bus is equipped with microscopes, computers, water quality sampling units, handheld spectrometers to measure nitrate and phosphate, a water proof drone, a meteorological station, plankton nets, and seine nets. During visits by the FIT Science Bus, students will be engaged in a series of activities that focus on local and global ocean topics, such as: density and how it varies throughout the ocean; changes in salinity based on the environment; sediment transport and distribution along the coast; phytoplankton and zooplankton communities; and the importance of filter feeding organisms in the Indian River Lagoon.
